Software Engineer Resume Keywords in 2026 (From Real Job Descriptions)
Python, TypeScript, Kubernetes, AWS, and CI/CD — the terms that actually appear in live software engineer postings, and how to place them without stuffing.
A software engineer resume fails in two directions: a 40-item tech soup, or a beautiful impact story that never names the stack. Live JDs still filter on named tools. Here is what 1,252 Software Engineer postings in our 15 August 2026 snapshot actually mention.
Keywords by frequency
| Skill | Share of SE postings |
|---|---|
| Python | 33% |
| Machine Learning | 22% |
| AWS | 22% |
| Kubernetes | 22% |
| TypeScript | 20% |
| Java | 19% |
| React | 19% |
| CI/CD | 18% |
| Go | 18% |
| PostgreSQL | 15% |
| JavaScript | 13% |
| GCP | 13% |
ML at 22% is not “every SE role is an ML role.” A large share of the SE sample is from Google, Databricks, Palantir, OpenAI, and similar boards where ML-adjacent product work is common. If your target JD never says machine learning, do not lead with it.
TypeScript + React is the clearest product-engineering pair. Python + Kubernetes + CI/CD is the backend/platform pair. Pick the pair the posting uses.
Where each keyword belongs
- Summary: level, domain, and 2–3 stack terms from the JD (“Backend engineer, TypeScript/Node, AWS, CI/CD”).
- Skills block: exact product names, grouped. See the layout in the SE resume guide.
- Bullets: one stack mention in context beats five in a list. “Shipped the billing API in TypeScript on AWS Lambda, p95 80ms → 22ms” survives ATS and the hiring-manager skim.
Mistakes this ranking will not save you from
- Listing Kubernetes when you have only run
kubectl get podsin a tutorial. 22% of JDs ask; interviews will too. - Writing “AWS” when the posting names ECS, RDS, and IAM. The family name helps; the services get you ranked.
- Ignoring CI/CD because you called it “GitHub Actions pipelines.” Use their phrase.
Next step
Paste the posting you want into RoleTuner’s ATS checker. You will see which of these terms this JD uses and whether your resume already has them. Then tailor the bullets you can honestly defend.
Method: 1,252 titles normalized to Software Engineer from 8,991 public postings (Arbeitnow, Greenhouse, Ashby, Google Careers, Lever, RemoteOK, Remotive), 15 August 2026. Keyword matching on description text. Aggregates only.
