Generic “top skills” lists mix every industry together, then tell engineers to learn Excel. We scored 8,991 public job postings collected on 15 August 2026 and then filtered to 2,367 engineering, data, and ML roles. The ranking below is what those descriptions actually mention.
The list (engineering roles only)

TypeScript (13%), React (12%), Azure (11%), and Docker (11%) sit just behind that cutoff. Cloud is not a single skill: AWS still leads, but GCP and Azure both show up enough that picking a “winner” is the wrong resume move.
This mix is heavier on US product and infrastructure boards than a generic jobs board. Python and Kubernetes climb; Excel does not.
Why unfiltered lists lie
Across all 8,991 postings — including European operations, sales, and logistics roles from Arbeitnow — Excel (8.5%) is close to SQL (11%) and AWS (11%). That is a real labor-market fact. It is a terrible software-engineer keyword list.
ATS ranking is per posting, not per “the market.” A data engineer JD weights dbt and Spark; a software engineer JD weights TypeScript and React. Copying a blended top-10 onto every resume is how qualified people still miss.
What to put on your resume
- Lead with the role’s stack, not the internet’s stack. If the posting repeats Kubernetes five times, Kubernetes belongs in your summary and a recent bullet — if you have used it.
- Pair the language with the cloud. Python without AWS/GCP/Azure is a weaker signal than Python in a pipeline that names the platform.
- Name CI/CD as CI/CD. “Automated deployments” is the work; “CI/CD” is the term recruiters search.
- Treat LLMs as a skill only if you shipped something. 15% of engineering JDs mention them. A course certificate without a production bullet will not survive the interview.
How we counted
Public APIs only: Arbeitnow (EU + UK), Greenhouse boards (Stripe, Databricks, Cloudflare, and others), Ashby (OpenAI, Notion, Cursor, and others), Google Careers, Lever, RemoteOK, and Remotive. Skills were extracted from posting text with a curated keyword list (word-boundary matching, not an LLM). We do not republish raw descriptions — only aggregates. Role titles were normalized (for example, “Staff Software Engineer, Payments” → Software Engineer).
